Aim

The aim of this course is to teach and activate in speech the most-used idioms in conversational Russian.

Idioms are the ornamentation of any language and make up a significant part of our daily speech. We use them without thinking to express feelings, or to express how we feel about a situation.

We present «Russian Idioms», a course intended for students at level A2 who wish to expand their vocabulary. By taking this course, you will not only understand conversational Russian with ease, but also use the idioms on your own, which will make your speech rich and free.

Temas

Lesson 1. Idioms that express emotions

During our first lesson, we will look at the idioms we use when we are in a hurry, as well as some idioms used to express annoyance, boredom, and happiness. For example, выйти из себя, не по себе, прыгать от радости and so on.

Lesson 2. Similar words, different meanings

In the second lesson we will discuss idioms that start with the same words, but differ in use. For example, во весь голос, во весь дух, во все глаза, and so on. We will also discuss the idioms used to talk about deception, idioms that contain comparisons with animals and their meaning.

Lesson 3. Similar structures, different meanings

The third lesson is devoted to idioms that have some similarities in form, but not always the same meaning. For example, ни слуху ни духу, ни стыда ни совести, держать нос по ветру, держать руку на пульсе, and so on.

Lesson 4. More idioms that express emotion

In the fourth lesson, we study idioms that we use to more fully express delight and indignation. Find out which idioms to use when you like something, when you feel uncomfortable, if you are doing something quickly. For example, ничего себе, нет слов, вот это да, одним махом, and ничего подобного.

Lesson 5. Idioms for specific purposes

In our fifth lesson, we examine idioms that we use when we are exhausted, when it's not a good idea to hurry, and when something is close to us. We will also discuss the most frequently used idioms, such as в двух шагах, время терпит, да нет, лучше не надо and so on.
